See a doctor promptly for: a new lump in the breast or armpit, change in breast size or shape, skin dimpling or thickening, a newly inverted (pulled-in) nipple, blood-stained nipple discharge, or a sore that does not heal. Most lumps turn out to be benign — but every new lump deserves a proper check-up.
Risk rises with age, a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, obesity, late first pregnancy or no pregnancy, not breastfeeding, early periods or late menopause, and long-term hormone therapy. Having a risk factor does not mean you will develop cancer — it means screening and self-awareness matter more.
Risk can be reduced: keep a healthy weight, stay physically active, breastfeed where possible, and avoid unnecessary long-term hormone therapy. Just as important is early detection — monthly self-examination and timely check-up of any new change. Early-stage disease is very treatable.
